Post Five: Favorite Myth/Legend/Lore (3/3/2020)
My first favorite myth, legend or lore probably has to be the Legend of Atlantis. It’s been something I’ve been interested in as a kid ever since I saw the Disney movie adaptation years ago, which happens to be my favorite. I honestly think that this adaptation of discovering the lost city of Atlantis is a great one simply because its directed to people of all ages, and is overall just an enjoyable movie for anyone that depicts a legendary story in a way that wont be too frightening to anyone or have many problems. It’s one of the more tame adaptations in the movie industry of a legend, lore or myth but it’s one of my favorites. Another one of my favorite adaptations of a myth, legend or lore is definitely the TV show series “Supernatural”. The entire series is based around legendary characters dating back hundreds of years, like Wendigo, Shapeshifters, the Brothers Grimm-style fairytale characters, and other creatures from cultures’ stories around the world. The show depicts these characters in a grisly way, but still is great because it gives a lot of background information on the creatures while still being entertaining. It’s not a run-of-the-mill horror show, but it still gets gritty with details on legend creatures. The last depiction of a myth, legend etc… that I think is effective is the live-action Cinderella movie from 2015. I think the movie definitely depicts the Cinderella fairytale in a way where all audiences would recognize the original story right away, yet still brings this sort of whimsical feeling with the live action cast that you don’t get with animation. It explains more of the story that caters to a whole new audience of Disney lovers without it being as simple as the original telling. It’s able to tell a story and send a message about love and kindness without being too cheesy so adults can enjoy it too.
